Sustainable Streetwear: How Above Average Clothing Builds Responsibly - Above Average Clothing

Sustainable streetwear combines responsible materials, ethical production practices, and durable design to reduce fashion’s environmental impact without sacrificing comfort, performance, or identity. At Above Average Clothing, I build streetwear using organic cotton, selective recycled materials where they add real value, and long-term product design — proving that modern streetwear in the UK can be both meaningful and responsibly made.

Streetwear isn’t usually the first thing people associate with sustainability. It’s often linked with fast trends, mass production, and clothing designed to be replaced rather than respected.

I started Above Average Clothing to challenge that thinking — not by claiming perfection, but by making better decisions wherever possible and building clothing people actually want to keep wearing.

Progress over perfection.

What is sustainable streetwear?

Sustainable streetwear isn’t one single material or certification. It’s a combination of how garments are designed, sourced, produced, and used over time.

In simple terms, sustainable streetwear aims to:

  • Reduce unnecessary environmental impact.

  • Use lower-impact materials where practical.

  • Prioritise durability and long-term wear.

  • Work with responsible production partners.

  • Avoid overproduction and wasteful trend cycles.

It’s about building clothing that fits real lives — not just marketing narratives.

Why sustainability matters in modern streetwear

Fast fashion has trained people to treat clothing as disposable. Low prices encourage over-buying, short wear cycles, and poor-quality garments that quickly lose shape, colour, or comfort.

I’m more interested in longevity. Fewer pieces, worn more often, that still feel good years later.

As a one-person brand running alongside full-time work, I don’t chase volume. I focus on building collections slowly, testing quality carefully, and refining designs based on how people actually wear them.

That mindset carries through everything I build — from CORE lifestyle pieces to DRMMR, GTRST and EQSTRN gear.

How I approach building products responsibly

Thoughtful material choices

Most of the collection is built around organic cotton for its comfort, breathability, and reduced chemical input compared to conventional cotton. In certain garments, recycled fibres or small amounts of stretch materials are introduced where they improve durability, structure, or fit.

Materials are selected based on real-world use, not trend claims. Comfort and performance always come first — sustainability follows closely behind.

Designed for longevity

Sustainability isn’t only about fabric composition. A poorly designed organic garment that sits unworn in a wardrobe isn’t sustainable either.

Fit, fabric weight, construction quality, and print or embroidery placement all affect how long a product stays in rotation. I design pieces to handle regular wear, repeated washing, and everyday life — not just a photoshoot.

Longevity is one of the most overlooked sustainability wins.

Responsible production partners

As the brand expands, I work with multiple production partners to balance quality, availability, and fulfilment speed. I prioritise partners who demonstrate responsible working standards, modern manufacturing processes, and improving environmental practices — including energy usage, material sourcing, and waste reduction initiatives.

It’s a continuous improvement process rather than a finished destination.

Sustainability includes people and community

Ethics go beyond materials and factories. They include how creators, collaborators, and communities are treated.

Above Average Clothing supports musicians, creators, and grassroots partnerships through fair collaboration models and long-term relationship building — not short-term extraction. Whether that’s drummer collaborations, band merch projects, or creator-led collections, the goal is shared growth and mutual value.

That human layer matters just as much as fabric specs.

Why mindset matters in sustainable fashion

Above Average Clothing is built around one simple principle: no ego, just evolution.

That means making better decisions consistently rather than chasing perfection or optics. It means improving product quality over time, refining supply partners, learning from mistakes, and staying grounded about what’s realistically achievable as a small brand.

Sustainability isn’t a badge — it’s a direction of travel.

Wrapping it up

Sustainable streetwear doesn’t have to be a contradiction. It simply requires intentional design, responsible sourcing, honest trade-offs, and a long-term mindset.

Above Average Clothing exists to prove that streetwear can be durable, meaningful, and responsibly made without losing identity or comfort.

If you care about what you wear and what it represents, explore the Above Average collections and see how sustainable streetwear performs in real life.
