Why I Use Sorona in Above Average Clothing

When I started building Above Average Clothing, I wasn’t trying to make just another streetwear brand.

I wanted clothing that actually works for how people live — especially if music is part of your identity.

That’s where Sorona fabric comes in.

It’s one of the few materials I’ve found that genuinely bridges the gap between:

  • performance
  • comfort
  • sustainability
  • and everyday wear

Not hype. Not marketing fluff. Just something that actually makes sense.

What Is Sorona Fabric?

Sorona is a performance fibre developed by DuPont that’s partially made from plant-based materials (typically corn glucose).

In simple terms:

  • It behaves like a performance fabric
  • But feels closer to cotton
  • And has a lower environmental impact than traditional synthetics

That combination is rare.

Most fabrics force you to choose:

  • Comfort or performance
  • Natural or durable

Sorona sits right in the middle.

Why Sorona Matters for Musicians and Creators

If you play, practice, film content, or just live in music — you’ll get this immediately.

Most clothing falls apart in real scenarios:

  • Heavy cotton = sweaty, clingy, uncomfortable
  • Cheap blends = lose shape, feel synthetic
  • Performance gear = looks like gym wear, not everyday clothing

Sorona solves that.

1. Built for Movement

Sorona has natural stretch without needing loads of elastane.

That’s why I use it in the Session Performance range — especially for drummers.

You get:

  • freedom in the shoulders
  • no restriction when playing
  • a fit that actually works when you move

2. Breathable Without Feeling Thin

One of the biggest myths in clothing is that “breathable” means lightweight.

Not true.

Sorona fabrics (like the 240gsm pieces I use) are:

  • structured
  • substantial
  • but still breathable

So you don’t get that flimsy feel — but you also don’t overheat in a session.

3. Keeps Its Shape (Huge for Creators)

If you film content, you’ll know this problem:

  • necklines stretch
  • tees twist
  • fits degrade after washes

Sorona fibres are resilient.

They help garments:

  • bounce back after movement
  • hold structure over time
  • look consistent on camera

That matters more than people realise.

4. More Sustainable Than Traditional Performance Fabrics

I’m careful with sustainability claims — because most brands overdo it.

But Sorona is a step forward.

Compared to traditional polyester:

  • partially plant-based
  • lower energy required in production
  • reduced reliance on fossil fuels

It’s not perfect — but it’s progress.

And that’s what Above Average is about:
progress over perfection.

Why I Use Sorona in the Session Performance Range

The Session range exists for one reason:

👉 clothing that performs when you’re actually doing the thing

Whether that’s:

Sorona helps make that possible without turning it into gym wear.

The Fit Matters Too

I pair Sorona with a boxy fit on purpose:

  • extra width = movement
  • reduced length = no bunching when sitting or playing

It’s not a fashion trend.

It’s functional design.

Sorona vs Cotton vs Polyester

Here’s the real-world breakdown:

Feature Cotton Polyester Sorona
Comfort High Low High
Breathability Medium Low High
Stretch Low Medium High
Shape Retention Low High High
Sustainability Medium Low Medium-High

Sorona is one of the only materials that scores well across everything.

Is Sorona Worth It?

If you just want a cheap tee — probably not.

But if you want clothing that:

  • performs during real use
  • holds its shape
  • feels good to wear
  • and aligns with a more sustainable direction

Then yes — it’s worth it.

That’s exactly why I’ve built it into Above Average Clothing.

Where to Buy Sorona Clothing in the UK

If you’re looking for Sorona-based clothing designed for music, creators, and everyday wear, that’s exactly what I’m building at:

I’m not trying to compete with fast fashion or gym brands.

I’m building something different:

  • identity-led
  • music-focused
  • performance-aware
  • and made to actually be worn, not just sold

Final Thought

Most clothing brands design for how things look.

I design for how things are used.

Sorona fits that mindset perfectly.

Not perfect.
Above average.
