The Story Behind Callaine

After years of playing in bands, Callaine decided it was time to step out as a solo artist and create music without compromise. Since launching the project in 2016, that freedom has allowed every release to reflect a personal musical identity built around expressive guitar playing, strong melodies and an openness to experiment.

Although it's a solo project, Callaine is very much built around a community of musicians. Live performances feature long-time friends Matt Bown on drums and Nai-iku Ogue on bass, musicians who've shared stages and bands together for years. That chemistry creates performances that feel natural, spontaneous and full of genuine interaction.

One of the biggest milestones so far has been the release of 'YearBook', the first Callaine track to feature vocals. It marks another step forward for the project while staying true to the creative curiosity that's been there from the beginning.

More Than Just A Guitarist

While guitar sits at the heart of Callaine's music, creativity doesn't stop there. Mandolin, cajón and trumpet have all appeared across different releases, adding extra colours and textures to the recordings and reflecting a musician who's constantly looking for new ways to express ideas.

Growing up, musical inspiration came from both family and a guitar teacher who helped shape not only technical ability but a lifelong appreciation for great musicianship. Every song is still written entirely by Callaine, allowing each release to remain personal and authentic.

Away from music, you'll just as likely find Callaine tending to the garden as practising guitar. That balance between creativity and everyday life perhaps explains why the music never feels forced—it simply comes naturally.

The Sound

Guitar Fusion

Callaine's music sits unapologetically between fusion, jazz and rock, combining tasteful guitar playing with infectious grooves and melodic songwriting. Fans of Guthrie Govan, George Benson, Ronny Jordan and Paco De Lucia will recognise the influence, but the result is something that feels personal rather than derivative.

For anyone discovering the project for the first time, 'Tuesday Standard' is the perfect introduction, showcasing the relaxed confidence, musicality and expressive guitar work that define the Callaine sound.

Live, the aim is never to overwhelm with technical ability. Instead, every performance is designed to be engaging, interactive and fun, with improvisation playing a huge part in making each show unique. The goal is simple: leave people smiling.

Looking Ahead

Like many independent artists, Callaine measures success differently. It's about releasing the next song, playing the next show and continually improving rather than chasing perfection.

The dream is to perform iconic venues such as The Jazz Café in Camden and Ronnie Scott's, while continuing to build a loyal audience that values musicianship, originality and genuine connection.

At its heart, Callaine is about freedom—the freedom to write the music you believe in, play alongside great friends and create something that people simply enjoy listening to.

🌱 When the guitar goes back in its case, you'll usually find Callaine in the garden nurturing plants instead of practising scales.

🎱 A good game of snooker is one of the few things that can distract Callaine from writing music.

Guitar isn't the only instrument in the studio, with mandolin, trumpet and cajón all featuring across different releases.

⚡ A Line 6 amplifier once electrocuted Callaine during a gig—fortunately making for a better story than a hospital visit.

🕺 Before a show, the playlist is just as likely to be packed with '70s disco or '90s drum & bass as jazz fusion.

🎬 If the project had to be compared to a film, Amélie comes closest for its creativity, charm and personality.

😂 One of the longest-running debates isn't about music at all, but who's remembered to bring the rubbish for "My Size In The Sunshine."

🚗 Success isn't measured in streaming numbers—it's turning up to a gig in a classic Jaguar XJ6.

VALUES

For Callaine, music has always been about bringing people together. Supporting local musicians, attending gigs, stepping in for friends' bands when needed and helping strengthen the local music scene are all just as important as writing new songs.

The philosophy is one that fits perfectly with Above Average's own outlook: keep creating, keep progressing and don't wait for perfection before sharing your work with the world.
