BUILT ON MUSIC.

Anna's collaboration with Above Average is about more than putting a design on a piece of clothing. It's about using music, creativity and community to help an ambitious young musician take the next step in her journey.

After earning a $120,000 scholarship to Berklee College of Music, Anna is now working, teaching, gigging and fundraising towards the remaining cost of studying in Boston.

Above Average is helping tell that story, raise awareness and turn something Anna has created herself — her music — into something people can wear to support the journey.

MEET ANNA

Anna Fettes is a drummer and musician from Fife, Scotland. Growing up in a small village, she started playing at just three years old after her mum bought a drum kit for family jam sessions.

Much of Anna's musical education came from playing with other musicians, alongside lessons from an early age. Growing up surrounded by Scottish traditional music also shaped the way she approaches the drums.

Rather than seeing rhythm in isolation, Anna thinks melodically — writing grooves with movement and musicality running through them. And while she takes inspiration from the players she admires, she's always been determined to develop a sound and identity of her own.

THE STORY

Anna knew she wanted to become a professional drummer from the age of 11. One moment in particular helped make that ambition feel real: seeing drummer Cat Myers performing with Texas on Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage.

She was the first female drummer Anna remembers seeing perform at that level.

At 15, Anna discovered Berklee College of Music's three-day Drum Workshop. With the support of her mum and others around her, she travelled to Boston alone — her first solo trip abroad — to experience Berklee and the city for herself.

It changed everything.

Anna returned for Berklee's five-week Aspire programme after fundraising and working to make the trip possible. Then, during Berklee's programme at Umbria Jazz in Italy, she auditioned for an undergraduate place.

She was awarded a $120,000 scholarship.

Worth $30,000 per year across a four-year degree, the scholarship covers much of Anna's tuition — but not all of it. Accommodation, the remaining tuition and travel to Boston still need to be funded.

So Anna is working for it.

She currently teaches around 14 students every week, plays gigs, saves what she earns, applies for grants, approaches potential sponsors and continues fundraising towards a target of $40,000.

For Anna, though, getting to Berklee isn't simply about earning a qualification. It's about being surrounded by musicians from around the world, developing as a player and building relationships she hopes will last throughout her career.

Her ambition is big: touring, session work and ultimately playing on the world's biggest stages — while one day using the platform she's built to help improve music education back home in Scotland.

"Just because you aren't brought up in a major city doesn't mean you can't have a career in what you do"
